Return Program

Lexmark has instituted a line of ink and toner cartridges called "Return Program". Return Program cartridges were sold at a lower price and the user was admonished by opening the package to have agreed to return the cartridge to Lexmark when it was exhausted. Lexmark claimed to be recycling the cartridges and therefore offered a lower price. Some Return Program cartridges had a different yield than the full price units. The return program cartridges are designed electronically to not work if refilled without replacing the electronics. Replacement electronics are not available for Lexmark ink cartridges.

The toner cartridges will probably disappear from the market due to a recent lawsuit. It remains unclear if the same will happen with Return Program ink cartridges. In the mean time, Lexmark Return Program ink cartridges cannot be refilled and returned to service. However, Non-Return Program cartridges can be refilled and in many cases may be replaced with other full yield ink cartridges. Generally speaking any "A" version cartridge may be refilled and many printers will also use black model 34 and color model 35 cartridges.
